Memories Bring on a Smile
Cycle Story#33

Today I had a flash of deja-vu.

I seem to have had some sort of stomach upset since Sunday which has taken away my appetite completely, this morning was the first time since then that I felt able to have a couple of slices of toast for breakfast. This has left me in no state to take part in a cycle ride but I went along to the start at Killay to wave everyone off.

Everyone consisted of Colin, John White and Mike Brewer, three brave men who were undeterred by the wet weather. Christine stopped to talk to us before cycling on to do her shopping in town so a bit of praise and a pat on the back for her too!! While the three riders rode off into the distance I got back into my car and drove for home and a thought flashed into my mind of the last time I went to the start point to wave everyone off. That was back in February of this year (No Pennard Please - I'm Poorly). The story I wrote then had a special significance and will always bring a smile to my face.

You see that day was the birth of Big Trev. Trevor was poorly as well that day and unbeknown to me both he and I were intending to meet the group at the lunch stop in Pennard. I arrived first and was sitting in the car waiting for the first arrivals, a blue car pulled up next to me - it was Trevor's. He came and sat with me, the passenger seat was just a little too far forward for his comfort but he declined the offer of sliding it back. We chatted about all sorts of things as you would do with Trevor and as we chatted this character developed in my mind. He became not Trevor but Big Trev, a sort of superhuman being standing 7'3" tall. Big Trev became the inspiration for many a story after that and he thoroughly enjoyed being written about.

Trevor was only Big Trev for a relatively short period in his life but 'big' was such an apt adjective for him. He features prominently in most of the stories, stories that I am very glad to have written because they not only remind us of enjoyable rides that we have had but also of a real gentleman who was a privelege to know.

Happy pedalling
